FAQs: Lift Chairs
How much does a lift chair cost?
The typical starting price of a lift chair is around $995 and can go up to $3500 or more. The price depends heavily on the type of lift chair. Two-position lift chairs are the least expensive option. Three-position lift chairs are slightly more expensive. Infinite position lift chairs are the most expensive option. The upholstery of the chair will also influence the price significantly. As well, specialty lift chairs such as wall huggers and heavy-duty models will be significantly more expensive than the average lift chair of the same collection.
Will Medicare pay for lift chairs (in the U.S.)? Is there funding available for lift chairs?
The lift chair itself is not covered under Medicare; only the lifting mechanism is covered. To be eligible, you must have severe arthritis in your hips or knees or a severe neuromuscular disease. The lift chair must also be prescribed by a doctor. The sum that you are reimbursed varies from state to state, so it’s a good idea to speak to your local lift chair dealer. They can help find out if you are eligible for Medicare or any other available funding programs.
What is the difference between a lift chair and a recliner?
A lift chair is a special type of recliner that offers more features including positioning options and a powered lifting mechanism. All lift chairs can recline but differ in the degree of recline offered.
I’m left-handed; can hand controls be placed on the left-hand side?
This should not be a problem for most lift chairs. However, the controls can’t be switched for some models. This is a good question to ask your local lift chair dealer before you buy.
What are “split chaise pads” and “full chaise pads”?
A split chaise pad has a gap between the front edge of the seat and the footrest. A piece of fabric normally drapes underneath the footrest to under the seat, so the mechanics of the footrest are hidden.
A full chaise pad has only one continuous piece of seat foam that extends from the back of the chair, over the top of the seat and all the way down to the front of the footrest. This provides more comfort and support when the footrest is raised.
Which lift chair is the best?
The best lift chair is dependent on your individual needs. The best way to know which lift chair is right for you is to visit a local home healthcare equipment dealer and try them out. Make sure to call them before you visit to confirm they have working lift chairs in their showroom to test.
